Top 10 flop buys of the season

By MIKE ANSTEAD

Published: 28 Apr 2008

THE transfer market was buzzing again last summer as Premier League clubs blew hundreds of millions on players.

Sitting back to reflect at the end of the season, many clubs will be delighted with their buys.

Manchester United may have spent around ?5million on Carlos Tevez, Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani but boss Alex Ferguson will be happy with all of their debut campaigns at Old Trafford.

Yet for every success, there has been an abject failure.

We have put together our pick for the worst buys of the season.

And to be fair, we have discounted players who have endured injury-plagued seasons or those who arrived in the January transfer window.

Let us know whether you think we have got it right or wrong using MY Sun below.

No10: Freddie Ljungberg

Ljungberg called time on his Arsenal career after nine highly successful years in North London. Yet, for all his past achievements, it was difficult to understand why West Ham were willing to pay a £3m fee and eye-popping wages for an injury-prone player, whose best years were clearly behind him.

No9: Robert Earnshaw

Earnshaw is the only player to score a hat-trick in all four divisions, both domestic cup competitions and in an international match. But despite that feat, the striker has never cut the mustard in the Premier League. At £3.5m, the Welshman was Derby’s big summer signing – but he has failed to score during their embarrassing league campaign.

No8: David Rozehnal

Newcastle have several defensive candidates for this list but Rozenhal stood out for his dire start to life in England. The £3m man was the latest in a long line to fail to shore up the leaky Toon backline and was shipped out on loan to Lazio in January. He even managed to look incompetent beside fellow new boys Jose Enrique and Abdoulaye Faye.

No7: Younes Kaboul

The defender was tipped as a future star when Spurs snapped him up from Auxerre. Kaboul was quickly thrown into the side but a string of erratic displays saw him dumped on the sidelines. The Frenchman could still prove a hit at White Hart Lane but currently looks far from an £8m buy.

No6: David Nugent

Just over a year ago, Nugent was on the verge of great things after scoring on his England debut. Where did it all go wrong? The striker can barely get a game at Portsmouth, begging the question of why was boss Harry Redknapp so keen to splash out £6m for him.

No5: Diomansy Kamara D.

Fulham went wild with the cash last summer as Lawrie Sanchez signed half of the Northern Ireland side. But the £6m spent on Kamara is arguably the biggest waste of all as the misfiring striker again failed to cut it in the top-flight. Saturday's crucial double at Man City should not disguise his poor season.

No4: Mido

Eyebrows were raised when Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate moved for Mido after losing star strikers Yakubu and Mark Viduka. The £6m man got off to a flyer by scoring in his opening two matches but the goals dried up and the Egyptian failed to find the net in his subsequent 15 games.

No3: Darren Bent

At £17m, Bent was always going to struggle to justify the price tag — particularly as a substitute. The striker has failed to break up the dominant partnership of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane. Eight goals have saved him from being branded a complete flop but Bent must do better next season.

No2: Rolando Bianchi

Perhaps Manchester City’s new-found wealth went to Sven Goran Eriksson’s head because little else can explain the £9m arrival of Bianchi from Reggina. The Italian striker was never suited to life in the Premier League, particularly while wearing gloves and a rollneck.

No1: Florent Malouda

Malouda is the latest in a long line of Chelsea players to fail to live up to their bloated price tag. The Blues spent much of last summer chasing the £15m Frenchman but the forward has looked lightweight and unthreatening in the Premier League. Malouda would face competition from Claudio Pizarro, Tal Ben Haim and Steve Sidwell were they not all free transfers.
You'll Never Walk Alone
