Fergie admits Rooney deserved to see red
14/9/05 8:30 PM
Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Wayne Rooney 'didn't give himself a chance' as the United striker was sent off against Villarreal.
The 19-year-old sarcastically applauded a harsh booking by Kim Milton Nielsen, who instantly brandished a second yellow card.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Sir Alex said: "I don't think Wayne gave himself a chance. I thought it was a harsh booking, but you can't applaud the referee like that.
"The referee didn't have a choice with the red card. He had a choice with the yellow card though, and that was disappointing.
"We've had disappointments with Kim Milton Nielsen before though. You have to handle that, that's European football for you. We've handled it in the past and we'll handle it again."
Ferguson cited the harsh nature of the first booking as the reason behind Rooney's reaction, and refused to be too harsh on his young star.
"He's 19 years of age," said Fergie. "He's a fiery character and competitive. I think maybe when he sees things that are a bit of an injustice against him then he reacts like that."
Rooney's departure came at a time when United had their Spanish hosts on the back foot, and Sir Alex conceded that the red card hindered United's impetus.
He said: "It came at a point when we were starting to control the match, which makes it even more disappointing.
"I think we may have gone on to get a good result for ourselves, but the sending off may have affected our attacking thrust. It certainly took away one of our best players."
Meanwhile, the Reds' frustrating night was compounded by the news that Gabriel Heinze's knee injury, which saw him limp out of the action midway through the first half, may see him spend a sustained period on the sidelines.
Ferguson said: "Gabi's got a knee injury and obviously we're going to have to examine it. Tomorrow we'll probably send him for a scan but it does look as if he's going to be out for a while though."
