RIO WANTS 150,000 A WEEK
RIO FERDINAND has opened talks with Manchester United by asking for a staggering £150,000-a-week contract that would make him the best-paid footballer in the world.
England star Ferdinand's agent Pini Zahavi flew into Manchester to start serious discussions over his star's future on Friday.
And the bombshell demands will rock Old Trafford as well as putting a huge question mark over Ferdinand's long-term plans.
Ferdinand is already on around £80,000-a-week but this request will double his cash... with the alternative that he is sold or leaves for nothing when his contract runs out in two years' time.
United broke the transfer record for a defender when they signed Ferdinand from Leeds and dangled their own millions to tempt him over the Pennines.
And the talks - begun by Israeli Mister Fixit Zahavi - come days after it was revealed he and Ferdinand had met Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon in London.
Sources close to the Ferdinand camp reveal that the Chelsea move is not on YET.
But few other clubs could afford that kind of wage. Ferdinand could go to Spain or Italy where salaries are sky-high but even Real Madrid baulk at going to £150,000-a-week.
Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that Ferdinand WILL sign a new contract in the next few days.
