Aston Villa vs Wigan
Date : Sat 22 Oct 2005 Kick Off : 15:00
Venue : Villa Park
Comp : Barclays Premiership
Villa's poor finishing cost them dear as an own goal and an Alan Mahon wonder goal seperated the two teams.
Lee McCulloch was suspended for this fixture after his sending off against Newcastle last weekend, and manager Paul Jewell decided to plump for a traditional left winger in his place, namely Irish international Alan Mahon.
Manager Paul Jewell had warned that Villa closed down their opposition quickly, and this proved the case during the early exchanges between the sides.
In the 14th minute, De Zeeuw fouled Kevin Phillips close to the by-line to concede the free kick. James Milner's right footed set peice was directed into the centre of the penalty area, and it was defender Liam Ridgewell who managed to head the ball, but it was wide of the near post.
But Latics were really lucky not to have gone behind in the 20th minute when Kevin Phillip's was allowed to latch onto a long ball, and with space between him and the goal it took a reflex save from John Filan to deny the former Southampton striker from twenty yards.
Just moments later, Graham Kavanagh's lay off allowed Henri Camara to stride towards the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful low shot, but it was straight into the hands of Villa 'keeper Thomas Sorensen.
Five minutes later, and Kevin Phillips was guilty of missing another clear cut chance. Milner crossed the ball from the edge of the box towards the far post, but Phillips nodded the ball wide of the post.
Latics stunned Villa Park on the half hour. It was a classic counter attack with Henri Camara allowed to race along the right flank before squaring the ball to Jason Roberts, who inched ahead of his marker Aaron Hughes, but it was the Villa defender who lashed the ball into his own net. Judging by the amount of chances Villa had previously created at the other end, it was probably against the run of play.
Villa should have levelled with eight minutes before half time. Luke Moore somehow managed to dispossess De Zeeuw without conceding a free kick was ran into the penalty area unchallenged. Moore should have easily slotted the ball past Filan, but instead he spooned it over the bar from close range.
The home side were left cursing their luck once more before the break as the first half ended at break neck speed. Milner's cross found Kevin Phillips at the far post, and the striker cut the ball back to Eirik Bakke, who drove the ball towards goal from 25 yards, but Filan parried the ball to Kavanagh who desperately cleared the ball away.
Half-Time: Aston Villa 0 - 1 Latics
Villa started the second half as they finished the first. In the 50th minute Gareth Barry's left footed strike towards the near post was palmed away by Filan for a corner.
But Latics could have sneaked a second in the 58th minute when Roberts managed to take the loose ball into the penalty area, but took a touch too many to control the ball in front of Sorensen before he was challenged.
Seven minutes later, Henri Camara won his battle with Aaron Hughes on the left flank, and left him for dead as he sped into the area with acres of space. He fired towards Sorensen but the Danish goalkeeper parried the shot away, and also saved Camara's rebound at the second attempt.
Villa tried and tried, but they just couldn't get a shot on target. In the 67th minute Olof Mellberg's long ball was headed over by Kevin Phillips, who was twelve yards from the target.
Jewell was forced to withdraw Jason Roberts due to injury, and Scottish winger Gary Teale was to be his replacement.
As the game drew towards the closing minutes, Villa looked to be running out of imagination, whilst Latics looked happy to hang on to what they had.
Latics finally put the nail in Villa's coffin though with just eight minutes to go. Gary Teale started the attack, and the former Ayr United winger passed to Bullard, who released winger Alan Mahon. The Irishman unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that crept into the far post!
Aston Villa spurned an awful lot of chances during the first half, but once Jewell's men went ahead courtesy of an own goal, they held their nerve and held their disicpline. They only went on the counter attack if they thought they would definitly get something out of it. Latics are now unbeaten in seven matches and the fairytale start to the season has not ended just yet.
