The former Celtics point guard, traded yesterday along with Michael Stewart, ---
Gugliotta and a first-round pick for Antoine Walker, has reportedly asked for a
buyout from the Hawks, and may then return to the Celtics under a new free agent
deal.
Atlanta, according to multiple sources, has agreed to buy Payton out of what's
left on the final year of his contract.
Though agent Aaron Goodwin declined comment last night, his client is already
believed to be receiving inquiries from several teams in anticipation of the
buyout.
Though Miami has reportedly expressed interest, the Celtics are still considered
a favorite to keep Payton in green, based on the starting role they can offer
him. With Dwyane Wade now in a shooting guard role, and Damon Jones also
commanding major backcourt minutes, the Heat may not have the same opportunity
for Payton.
The 36-year-old point guard, reportedly in Los Angeles visiting his family last
night, was unavailable for comment.
Walker heard that Payton could be headed back to the Celtics not long after the
announcement of yesterday's swap, which came 10 minutes before the trading
deadline.
``That would have to make us one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference,''
an excited Walker said. ``That would be great to have him on this team.''
The Hawks, who also intend to buy out Stewart, have little interest in adding a
36-year-old veteran to a struggling team with 10 wins that has yet to win two
consecutive games this season.
The Celtics recently approached Goodwin about the possibility of a two-year
extension - an idea that gained momentum with Payton's growing affinity for the
