About a year.....
What did we do? Of course it's dim sum! If you know how to how a chopstick properly, order the right dim sum and pour tea for the parents, you pass the first gate!
I took my girlfriend's parents (now my parents-in-law la) to a fancy Chinese restaurant for dim sum. My wife has told them a bit about me already (so they have an idea of what your name is, what you do for a living and who's in your family, etc.). It was an intense beginning but we chat about current affairs, what to do on weekend, stuff like that.....
Things I've learned from my experience:
1) Be on time! If you are late, you will climb a long uphill road in PR work!
2) Let the parents choose what they want to eat, never take the initiative!
3) When it's time to order, don't order really expensive things. The parents may think of you as a spender with no brain.
4) Pour tea...lots of tea....but don't bring them food with your own saliva-dipped chopstick!
5) Try not to talk too much. Answer their questions in short sentences.
6) It's okay to be tense (believe me, they are just as scared as you are), just smile. Cheerful face score points.
7) If other relatives are coming too, make sure you talk to them with eye contact.
8) Do some homework before the meeting (names of people, taboos..etc.)
9) Be genuine about youself..don't bluff! Parents like their future son-in-law to be honest . And they have eat more salt then your portion of rice!
10) One last thing, it's nice to know not only they are reading you on the spot, you are reading them as well. It's a mutual interview process.
