   Liverpool Echo 31 August 2005

   RAFA BENITEZ today dismissed suggestions Liverpool lacked the desire
to bring Michael Owen home - as he launched a ￡7m bid to sign Portugal
winger Simao Sabrosa.

   Benitez admitted for the first time he was trying his utmost to sign
Owen and made a last ditch attempt to persuade the striker to change his
mind.

   The Liverpool boss said the ￡16m price tag made a deal 'impossible'.

   Owen's decision has removed any possibility of the Reds selling
Djibril Cisse.

   The Liverpool boss today continued his pursuit of a right winger with
Benfica's 25-year-old skipper Simao the target, but the chances of signing a
centre-half before midnight have diminished.

   Simao is a product of the Sporting Lisbon youth system who moved to
Barcelona to replace Luis Figo in 1999.

   He returned to Portuguese football in 2001 and has represented his
country at every level.

   While Liverpool try to secure a major signing, they are still
lamenting the decision of Owen.

   Responding to claims the
   Owen deal broke down because Liverpool didn't do enough to persuade
him, Benitez told the ECHO: "It's ridiculous to say he didn't join because
we didn't want him.

   "We tried until the very end to sign Michael. We even made phone calls
early yesterday morning. In the end, it was impossible.

   "When we spoke to Madrid, they only ever talked about ￡16m. We
couldn't spend that much money on a player we sold for ￡8m. We have to
think about the club over any player in this situation.

   "Real Madrid put a lot of pressure on Michael to go to Newcastle
because they wanted the money to sign Sergio Ramos. I hoped Michael would
say no and then, maybe, we could do something."

   Benitez knows he now faces a delicate situation with Cisse, who is
angry at the way a potential transfer was handled.

   The Liverpool boss revealed several offers for the striker were
rejected.

   "Whenever I was asked about Owen I had to respect the strikers we have
at the club." said Benitez..

   "We had offers for Cisse, some involving loan deals. We never planned
to sell Cisse but when Madrid kept on telling us they wanted ￡16m, it was a
problem and we had to look at different possibilities. We had clubs
interested in Djibril, but we made it clear to them we wanted to keep the
player.

   "I like Cisse and he is the type of player we need to score a lot of
goals and he showed that in the Super Cup final. We didn't want to sell him
and that's why we turned down some offers.

   "I thought we could bring Michael to the club because Neil Mellor is
out injured for a few more weeks and some clubs are interested in taking him
on loan.

   "We need different sorts of strikers at the club and having Michael,
Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Fernando Morientes, Peter Crouch and Djibril Cisse
would have given us many different options."

Liverpool still need a defender woo....
But i think we still need another stirker~~~~~if 1 of them is like cisse last season...........oh my god~

Benfica have blocked Liverpool's attempts to sign winger Simao Sabrosa.

The 25-year-old Portuguese international was given permission to speak to Liverpool and to undergo a medical but his club have blocked the deal at the 11th hour.

Benfica are currently preventing a deal from going through which suggests there is a problem with the transfer fee.

Liverpool have until midnight to have any transfers rubber-stamped.

【Football321.com】賓菲加隊長森馬奧欲轉會利物浦告吹，原因是賓菲加要求1360萬英鎊的轉會費。

利物浦已經出價1020萬英鎊，雖然森馬奧已身在英國，但利物浦不願意提升轉會費至賓菲加的要求。

賓菲加方面證實森馬奧本人極之失望，但相信該葡萄牙國腳仍然會為賓菲加付出所有，因為森馬奧是一名職業操守極佳的球員。
