LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez has made a £4.5million bid for promising Danish centre-half Daniel Agger.

Benitez hopes to tie down a deal for the 20-year-old Brondby defender this week as he closes in on the young player to cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Agger impressed against England and Wayne Rooney (right) last week in the shock 4-1 thumping but Liverpool have been on his trail for weeks. Brondby are looking for £6m for Agger, who was also watched by Everton and Wigan during the close season.

Benitez is trying to force down the fee but may have to offer more which is why he is counting the pennies in his other moves for a right winger and a possible Michael Owen swoop.

Liverpool will probably have to sell Milan Baros to finance the Agger swoop, but Benitez is convinced that the young Dane is the right man to groom for the future.

Carragher has been outstanding but is expected to play every week while Hyypia needed to be rested during the last campaign. Since then, Mauricio Pellegrino and Stephane Henchoz have left.

Straight-talking Benitez wants that vacancy filled before he explores other targets, including the right wing "problem".

Liverpool need as much cash as possible for Baros as it will fund the Agger deal and that is why they are playing off Villa and French champions Lyon.

All of this negotiation leaves Owen waiting for the call from Liverpool about a possible return, a nervous wait for him with the transfer window running out.

Rafa refuses to rule out Kuyt move

Rafael Benitez today admitted that Dutch scoring sensation Dirk Kuyt is a player who interests the European Champions.
While the media have been linking the Reds with a move for former Anfield star Michael Owen, Benitez today spoke of a different striker altogether - Feyenoord's Dirk Kuyt.

"Kuyt is a good striker," Rafa claimed today at Melwood. "He was top scorer in the Dutch league last season and he is a player we have been looking at. Maybe he is cheaper than other players but we'll have to see what happens

On the subject of Milan Baros's future, Benitez said: "Baros at this moment is our player but he might not be in the next two to three days. We have had a very good offer from Lyon and another offer from Aston . The player himself wants to stay in England so I would say Aston Villa are closer to a deal."
