Keane out for three weeks

Manchester United captain Roy Keane will be out of action for at least three weeks after fracturing two ribs.

United manager Alex Ferguson revealed that his captain had suffered the injury in the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premiership campaign and had played with it in Saturday's win over Norwich.

"He has been playing with a bit of pain and it was just too much after Saturday," Ferguson said. "He hasn't trained since Saturday and he's going to be out for three weeks which is a bit of a blow."

The Irish midfielder, who was missing from the United line-up for the second leg of their Champions League final qualifier against Dynamo Bucharest on Wednesday, was advised that he risked puncturing a lung if he did not give the injury time to heal.

His lay-off means he will miss Monday's Premiership clash with Everton, Ireland's opening World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus and Switzerland on September 4 and 8.

The earliest he is likely to be back in a United shirt is when United begin their campaign in the Champions League proper on September 14 or 15.

Keane joins Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wes Brown on United's injury list with Sir Alex Ferguson's early season problems compounded by the absence of Rio Ferdinand, who does not return from suspension until September 20, and new signing Gabriel Heinze, who is on Olympic duty with Argentina.

One bright spot for Ferguson is that Louis Saha is nearing full fitness. The French striker was on the bench on Wednesday night and should line-up alongside Alan Smith against Everton on Monday.

Determined Fergie closing in on top target Rooney

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to step up his efforts to tempt Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford after matching Newcastle's bid for the Everton ace.

Manchester United are looking forward to the group stages of the Champions League - and hope Rooney will arrive at Old Trafford to boost their campaign.

The prospect of playing in Europe's top club competition and all the perks that go with it might just be enough to tempt the England and Everton striker.

United are due to hold top-level talks on Thursday in a bid to kick on their attempt to snap up the 18-year-old prodigy.

United manager Ferguson said: "We will discuss the matter on Thursday. We have made our intentions clear that we would like the boy.

"This is the first time we have actually said that.

"Don't forget Everton have not said he is for sale. We have to wait to see what they say to be honest with you.''

United's sudden bid for Rooney was a surprise given that chief executive David Gill had claimed they would not enter a bidding war.

Only on Tuesday Ferguson insisted that it would be "unlikely'' they would move for England's brightest young talent.

However 24 hours later the Old Trafford boss admitted he tried to attract Rooney during the close season.

"I was hoping at the start of the season but time ran out,'' said Ferguson. "I started thinking we had no chance.

"He is a fabulous player, he showed that at Euro 2004 - and is a young player.

"He is not the finished article yet, but we have got experience of bringing young players to the club and bringing them on.

"He has a great chance, the lad, but you have to remember that he is only 18.''
