Eduardo suffers horror break

Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva suffered an horrific broken leg in the opening minutes of the Premier League clash with Birmingham.

The Croatia international was challenged by Birmingham's Martin Taylor in the third minute of the game at St Andrews with the centre-back being shown an immediate red card by referee Mike Dean.

Eduardo's clearly distressed team-mates immediately signalled to the sidelines that urgent attention was required and the game was held up for seven minutes as he received treatment on the field.

The injury was deemed to be so serious that replays of the incident were not shown on television.

Photographs of the challenge and the immediate aftermath suggest the injury is similar to the break suffered by Manchester United forward Alan Smith during their FA Cup defeat at Liverpool in 2006.

Eduardo is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and is certain to miss the remainder of this campaign and Croatia's Euro 2008 challenge in the summer.

Although I'm not a big fan of neither Arsenal nor Croatia...
It is always a deeply upset news to hear with....

I've watched that match.... that slide tackle was really killing a player......
No one knew what to do by that time.... all were puzzled....

After that, Gunners became frustrated and lack of powers.....
I can feel how serious it was.....

Eduardo had to leave by wearing Oxygen mask....
He was sent to the hospial and has a surgery immediately......

I felt deeply sad about Eduardo's serious injury......

Martin Taylor was simply without sportsmanship.....
He is simply the shame from the field !!!!

Martin Taylor should be either global banned or asked to seriously confess and say sorry to Eduardo.....

May God bless Eduardo and let him cure soon....
Hope he can go back to the top form........

It is very strange for Arsene Wenger to retract what he has said to the media post-match....

Besides, both Alex McLeish and Steve Bruce said that Martin Taylor wasn't malicious to do that....
Let's see......

Wenger retracts Taylor criticism

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says his initial comments that Birmingham captain Martin Taylor "should never play football again" were "excessive".
Wenger claimed the third-minute tackle which broke Eduardo's leg and earned Taylor a red card was "horrendous".

But later on Saturday Wenger said: "I feel that my comments about Martin Taylor were excessive. I said what I did in the heat of the moment."

"It was a highly emotional afternoon and we were all shocked by the injury."

Eduardo, 24, remained lying on the pitch for seven minutes as medical staff attended to him before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.

He underwent surgery later on Saturday and will miss the rest of the season, with Wenger fearing a "much longer" absence.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish sprang to the defence of Taylor.

"Martin's not a dirty player. He's distraught over Eduardo's injury," he said.

Martin Taylor is adamant there was no malicious intent in the tackle and he is deeply upset by the extent of Eduardo's injury

Birmingham statement

"I've seen the challenge and, yes, the studs land on Eduardo's ankle. In slow motion these tackles always look bad but he's not a malicious player - Eduardo was just too quick for him," he explained.

"The referee's done his job, it's a sending off, but Taylor's not a malicious player."

Birmingham released a statement later on Saturday saying the club were "saddened that such a fantastic game of football has been marred by a serious injury".

It added: "Martin Taylor is adamant there was no malicious intent in the tackle and he is deeply upset by the extent of Eduardo's injury.

"Having reviewed the incident, this (no malicious intent) is clearly the case. The club and Martin Taylor would like to send their very best wishes to the player for a speedy recovery."

The seriousness of the injury was apparent as both sets of players and medical staff looked shocked while Eduardo was treated on the pitch.

The Brazilian-born striker now looks certain to miss out on Croatia's participation at Euro 2008 in June.

"It was a massive shock for the team. They've seen what kind of state he was in," Wenger added.

"He's a fantastic guy and to see him in such pain and the shape of his leg was very difficult for the players.

"We hope he comes back quickly but the minimum is his season is over and we are scared that it is much longer."

Wenger hit out at the way he feels his team have been targeted by opponents.

"It goes with the idea that to stop Arsenal you have to kick Arsenal and that kind of thing was waiting to happen," he said.

"Many people have got away with too many bad tackles. We've escaped a few times but it's just not acceptable. If that is football it's better to stop it.

"The worst thing you hear after is that 'he's not the kind of guy who usually does that', but you need to only kill one person one time - it's enough."

Wigan boss Steve Bruce, who signed Taylor from Blackburn when he was Blues boss in February 2004, said his former player would never intentionally hurt anyone.

"Martin Taylor is the biggest, gentlest man," said Bruce. "There will be nobody more upset and sickened than him, there is not a bad bone in his body.

"He would never, ever do anything malicious. He has mis-timed the tackle, and I've seen it. Some would say it is not even a yellow card."
News about Eduardo's injury: (QUOTE from other forum)
Manager Arsène Wenger revealed more details of the break, saying that Eduardo suffered multiple breaks on the same leg.

Wenger said: "The minimum is that Eduardo's season is over and we are scared that it is much worse.

"The first diagnosis is very, very bad. He appears to have broken his shin, fibula and ankle."

The Arsenal manager also called on for Martin Taylor to be banned for life from the game.
One of the ambulance technicians who was involved with the aftermath of the injury, also expressed his thoughts on the incident.

Keith Bringley said: "When they got the sock off, it was clear that he had an open fracture. His bone was sticking through the skin and his leg was in an 'L' shape.

"It had looked like a straightforward break but he was in too much pain for an ordinary break.

"We administered a painkiller and they had to get a translator out on to the pitch because the lad doesn't speak English.

"We put a vacuum splint on it to immobilise him and gave him oxygen once he was on the stretcher.

"We knew it was serious because he went straight by ambulance to the Selly Oak trauma unit while normal football injuries go from here to Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham."
Sky match director Grant Best, who made the decision not to show a replay of the injury to viewers, said: "The reaction of Cesc Fabregas told me it was a bad injury so I quickly looked at the replay.

"That told me it was a very bad injury and we weren't going to show it. It looked like his foot was hanging from his leg.

"It is the most horrific injury I have seen in 13 years of working in football and it reminded me immediately of David Busst's injury."

David Busst was a Coventry City defender who suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in a collision with Manchester United defender Denis Irwin during a match at Old Trafford in April 1996.

The leg break was so bad that the bone pierced the skin and Busst's blood had to be cleared from the pitch.

He never played professionally again. United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who witnessed the injury, required counselling afterwards.
