Anfield boss Rafael Benitez believes the Birmingham midfielder (above) would be ideal for the wide right position he has been trying to fill for a year.

Fernando Morientes ended a miserable 18 months at Anfield yesterday with a &pound;3m move to Valencia, blaming Benitez for a "lack of confidence" in him.

Birmingham City have rejected reports linking Jermaine Pennant with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Speculation in Tuesday's newspapers claimed The Reds had offered &pound;3.5 million for the former Arsenal winger, but Birmingham have again insisted that the player is going nowhere.

Following Blues' relegation to The Championship, many believed the likes of Emile Heskey and Pennant would leave St Andrews in the summer, but Pennant is thought to be keen to help the club regain their top-flight status.

"Birmingham have not received an offer of any kind from Liverpool for the player and neither does it expect oneBirmingham have not received an offer of any kind from Liverpool for the player and neither does it expect one," a statement on the club's official website read.

"Managing director Karren Brady has spoken to her counterpart Ricky Parry at Liverpool and informed him that Jermaine Pennant is not for saleJermaine Pennant is not for sale.

"Reacting to today's stories, Brady wants to reassure supporters that the club is determined to keep hold of its best players to give us the best chance of returning to the Premiership at the first attempt."

Brady added: "We want to get out of this division as soon as possible.

"Therefore we will be buying players and not selling them as our aim is to go into The Championship with the best squad in the league."

Striker agrees personal terms

Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has reportedly agreed personal terms with Marseille after he was given permission to filter-004 a move.

Reds chief executive Rick Parry is confident of agreeing a deal with Marseille chief Pape Diouf who is believed to be on Merseyside to filter-004 various options.

One of those options is a loan move but Liverpool want hard cash and with Lyon also interested, Parry might just get lucky.

There are also suggestions that Liverpool could try and negotiate a deal for winger Franck Ribry but his speculated value is estimated at around &pound;25million.
