Disappointing draw for Latics as substitute David Dunn cancels out Andreas Johansson's goal to let a one goal advantage slip.

The Blues arrived at the JJB Stadium with new found confidence after two clean sheets in a row, but Latics were still mystified at how they only drew at Ewood Park on Monday evening.

Latics still harboured hopes of putting together a late run of results to edge themselves into the top six and a place in Europe, but that would also mean having to end a seven match run of not winning a league game at home, the last being against Manchester City on Boxing Day. Meanwhile, Birmingham had just clawed their way out of the relegation zone for the first time in over six months, and were desperate to stay out of it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both teams showed their eagerness to get forward and attack in the early stages, but it was former Celtic striker Chris Sutton who steered a shot towards the far post and forced Filan to divert the ball away.

The visitors went even closer to scoring when Jermaine Pennant's corner found Emile Heskey, but the header was cleared off the line by Baines at the far post.

There was a nervy moment for the home fans though. Filan's poor goal kick in the 11th minute led to the ball landing at the feet of Emile Heskey, but the former Liverpool striker was dispossessed by a tremendous tackle by De Zeeuw.

Latics started to pressurise, and five minutes later they sent bodies towards the penalty area. Andreas Johansson shielded the ball from his marker before laying it off to Baines. The defender sent a low cross into the box destined for Roberts at the near post, but the striker couldn't quite get the touch he needed to divert it into the net.

In the 20th minute the Blues came forward again and Heskey shook off a challenge from Baines before giving the ball to Sutton. The veteran held it up well before sending a shot wide from the edge of the area.

Jewell's men went on the counter attack six minutes later, when Roberts latched onto a long ball from Lee McCulloch. The Grenedan international cut in from the left flank teasing Kenny Cunningham before unleashing a curling shot towards the far post, but Maik Taylor reacted well and produced a fantastic save to palm away for a corner.

Jimmy Bullard was unlucky not have forced Birmingham's goalkeeper into a save on 38 minutes when he drove the ball from twenty-five yards, as it rose just over the bar.

Paul Jewell had to replace Leighton Baines with on-loan Reto Ziegler three minutes before the half-time with a suspected injury.

Half-Time: Latics 0 - 0 Birmingham

It took just three minutes of second half for Latics to take a lead. Jimmy Bullard pumped the ball into the box from a free-kick, and it was flicked on by McCulloch to Andreas JOHANSSON who sent a looping header over Maik Taylor and into the back of the net. That took the Swede's tally to seven for the season in all competitions.

But the Blues should have levelled four minutes later though when Emile Heskey glanced a header wide of the target at the near post.

The visitors came pouring forward in the 56th minute when the impressive Jermaine Pennant used his pace to get round the Latics defence before sending a low cross into the penalty area, but the receiver Jiri Jarosik scuffed his shot and it was easily cleared by the Latics defence.

The match continued its end to end nature, and on 63 minutes Lee McCulloch fed the ball to Johansson who ran around his defensive marker and toe poked the ball just wide of Maik Taylor's far post.

Andreas Johansson forced a corner by putting pressure on Martin Taylor. Reto Ziegler sent the ball towards the six yard box, but the heavily marked Lee McCulloch could only divert the ball over the bar

Birmingham did not lie down though, and they came close to scoring in the 73rd minute when Jermaine Pennant's corner found Heskey, but the former Liverpool strikers fierce header was superbly blocked by the brave Paul Scharner.

The Blues did equally well defending when Lee McCulloch's cross found Gary Teale, whose volley was blocked by Matt Sadler's head. And Reto Ziegler tried his luck by drilling the shot from 25 yards, but it the ball went straight into the hands of Maik Taylor.

But just as it looked like Latics might dominate the end of the match Birmingham did force the equaliser in the 76th minute. Emile Heskey powered his way into the penalty area and squared the ball towards the far post, where substitute David DUNN squeezed the ball into the net despite having two markers in close proximity.

The goal looked to have deflated Latics as it was the visitors who seemed more determined to find a winning goal.

Camara was grappled to the ground by Sadler to give away a free kick with five minutes remaining, but Bullard's set piece comfortably found its way into the hands of the Blues goalkeeper.

It was an entertaining match with many opportunities for both teams, but the search for a first home win of the calendar year continues.

英格蘭超級足球聯賽,富咸1比0擊敗韋根。

Match report:
Wigan dominated at Craven Cottage by having the lions share of possession, but a Steed Malbranque goal on the stroke of half-time decided matters.
Ambitions for reaching the top six in the Premiership took a major dent on Monday night after Fulham continued their impressive home form and took all three points to mathematically secure their top flight status for another year.
Latics dominated with crosses put into the box throughout the ninety minutes, but Jewell's men couldn't find a vital breakthrough, and in the end it took a crisp finish from Steed Malbranque just before the end of the first half to decide the match.
Both Matt Jackson and Mike Pollitt were recalled to the starting line-up but Jewell could not name a substitute goalkeeper on the bench.

Mike Pollitt was tested as early as the third minute when Steed Malbranque drilled a shot from outside the penalty area, but the former Rotherham goalkeeper made a firm save.
From thereon Latics pressurised their opponents, and in the 11th minute the lively Gary Teale cut into the penalty area from the right flank, and his attempted low cross into the box was ricocheted off a defender, and the Scottish winger then pulled the trigger from a tight angle. The ball was destined for the far corner, but Finnish goalkeeper Antti Niemi produced a fine save to deny Latics a lead.
Fulham responded with half chances, and former Watford striker Heidar Helguson missed two opportunities within the space of five minutes. He headed straight into the hands of Pollitt just before a quarter-of-an-hours play, before volleying over the bar from Malbranque's cross.

Latics went straight up the other end of the pitch and Teale crossed towards the far post, where Jason Roberts towered above Liam Rosenior who headed the ball just wide from six yards. The Scot produced another dangerous cross five minutes later, but this time it was McCulloch who couldn't direct the ball onto the target.
When Fulham did venture into Wigan's half, rarely did they appear threatening, although in the 31st minute Stephane Henchoz was forced to cut out Boa Morte's cross just to be on the safe side.
Four minutes later, Henri Camara tried his luck with a twenty-five yard shot and saw it go wide of Niemi's goal.
But the Cottagers devastated Wiganers when in stoppage time they took an unexpected lead. Luis Boa Morte threaded the ball to the edge of the penalty to Steed MALBRANQUE, who despite being surrounded by Latics defenders, managed to stay onside and fired a clinical strike past Pollitt into the top corner of the net. It was a superb finish by the Frenchman, but his team certainly did not deserve it.
Half-Time: Fulham 1 - 0 Latics
The Londoners came out blazing at the start of the second and could have doubled their advantage when Helguson drilled a left footed shot towards the near post, which Pollitt had to scramble out for a corner.
But in truth, the Cottagers still didn't really test the Latics goalkeeper, and Jewell's men kept up the pressure on their hosts.
Jimmy Bullard's thirty yard drive was comfortably saved by Niemi, before Gary Teale, who caused problems all evening down the right wing, forced a corner off his marker on the hour mark.
Bullard floated the ball from the corner into the centre of the penalty area, and there was Matt Jackson to direct it towards goal, but it was straight at Antti Niemi.
In the 68th minute, Roberts laid the ball off to Bullard, and the former Peterborough man sent a thundering shot towards the Fulham goal, but it was parried away by their Finnish goalkeeper.
Latics did eventually get the ball into the net, only to have it chalked off for offside. Luis Boa Morte's reckless challenge on Teale allowed Bullard to send the ball into the box, but Jason Robert's header was cancelled out by the linesman. Moments later, McCulloch headed the ball towards the near post only to see it bounce off a Fulham defender.

With just ten minutes remaining, Latics continued to dominate until the final third, where they just couldn't quite create anything clear cut. Henri Camara blazed over the bar from thirty yards before Steed Malbranque's long range effort was saved by Pollitt.
American international Brian McBride almost cost his team dear with five minutes left when his rash challenge on Baines resulted in a yellow card. Jimmy Bullard free-kick saw the ball pumped into the area, but McCulloch headed over.
The drama didn't stop there, as Latics did create the clear-cut opening they were hoping for. Pascal Chimbonda used his pace to beat the Fulham defence and get to the by-line before diverting the ball across the penalty area to substitute David Connolly, making his first appearance since January, scuffed his shot with the net wide open! Henri Camara raced towards the loose ball to try and tidy up, but his put into the side the netting.
The result saw Latics remain in ninth position in the Premiership, and will now face a challenge to finish the campaign in the top ten. Latics had nearly two thirds of possession, and showed plenty of effort, but just couldn't force the piece of luck they needed for the breakthrough.

Full-Time: Fulham 1 - 0 Latics

Latics Starting Line Up: Pollitt, Chimbonda, Jackson, Henchoz, Baines, Teale (Connolly 87), Bullard, Kavanagh, McCulloch, Camara, Roberts.
Unused Substitutes: Johansson, Wright, Ziegler, Thompson.

BULLARD'S MOVE TO FULHAM CONFIRMED
CLAUSE IN CONTRACT MEANS CLUB ARE 'POWERLESS' TO PREVENT TRANSFER

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that midfielder Jimmy Bullard has chosen to join Premiership rivals Fulham after activating a release clause in his contract.

A fee has been agreed between the two clubs, and an agreement has been reached for Bullard to join the Cottagers on May 8th, the day after the final game of the season.

The 27 year-old Londoner, who has featured in every single one of the 142 league games since signing from Peterborough for £275,000 in 2003, travelled to London on Thursday to agree personal terms and undergo a medical.

Latics Manager Paul Jewell said he was extremely disappointed to lose the player, but added there was little he could do to prevent the move: "Jimmy's agent has alerted clubs as to the figure any prospective club needs to bid," he revealed, "and in the end it's Jimmy's decision to go.

"If a player decides to leave, it is best if he does. I have always said there's no point keeping unhappy players, or at least players who want to move. It¹s all come out of the blue. The timing is not the best but I understand that Fulham wanted to move quickly and not lose their man."

Jewell revealed that the clause was inserted when Bullard signed a new contract last Summer. "He would not have signed the new contract had it not been in there," said Jewell, "and the alternative was having him walk away for nothing when his old contract expired at the end of this season. We had the same situation with Nathan Ellington and a similar clause was removed from Pascal Chimbonda¹s contract earlier this season."

Jewell said he had lengthy filter-004ions with Bullard during the week, and added: "Jimmy is sad to go but he sees this as the next step in his career.

We don¹t want him to go but wish him all the best for the future."

Jewell revealed that the club were not prepared to get into an auction.

"If we had decided to match Fulham¹s wage offer," he said, "then maybe, we could have kept hold of him but I didn"t want to set a dangerous precedent and be held to ransom. That would be extremely unhealthy.

"We're getting ten times what we paid for him. Jimmy's been fantastic for us, he's not missed a game, he's a great lad but once someone says he wants to leave, and there's a clause in his contract to say he can, what can we do?

"He's a good player, but so was Arjan deZeeuw when he left the first time, so was Jason DeVos, so was Roy Carroll, so was Nathan Ellington. We got over those disappointments and came back stronger."

Jewell revealed that he already has midfield targets in mind as replacements.

Ten men Latics lose in a hugely entertaining encounter at the JJB Stadium, but the win for Pompey means they stay in the Premiership next season.

The club were still recovering from the shock of Jimmy Bullard's £2.5million transfer to Fulham, and as a result, the Pompey match was the first Premiership match the former Peterborough midfielder missed this season.

But it was good news for David Thompson who slotted into the central midfield position for his eigth league start since his free transfer from Blackburn Rovers in January.

Portsmouth? Leading scorer Lomana LuaLua, who had been have intensive treatment in an oxygen chamber in a bid to heal his ankle did not make it into the Pompey squad, and so Todorov and Benjani were the striking partnership for the south coast club,

Portsmouth desperately needed the points to keep themselves on top of Birmingham, who played Newcastle. Meanwhile, a draw for the south coast club would beenough to send West Bromwich down, who don't play until Monday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With a huge following from Portsmouth filling up the five thousand capacity North Stand, there was an electric atmosphere inside the JJB Stadium, and there were plenty of chances.

Within the first three minutes Henri Camara lashed a shot straight at Dean Kiely before Pedro Mendes' long ball found Todorov who escaped the offside trap, but the striker was marshalled well by the Latics defence.

Gary Teale crossed from the right flank towards David Thompson at the far post, but it was headed over the bar, and then moments later Andres D'Allesandro's dangerous looking left footed cross was headed over by Todorov from close range.

The south coast club continued to put pressure when Todorov's header was deflected out for a corner. The Argentine D'Allesandro sent a corner to the far post where Benjani fired a shot which was parried away by Pollitt on 11 minutes.

Henri Camara proved to be real threat to Portmouth's Premiership credentials, as the Latics striker had loads of chances to put Jewell's men a goal up.

Graham Kavanagh's through-ball to Camara enabled the Senegal striker to sprint away from the Pompey defence, but his shot was well blocked by Dean Kiely at point blank range.

Camara did indeed put the ball into the empty net past the oncoming Kiely on 14 minutes when David Thompson produced a superb ball to Camara over the Portsmouth midfield. But referee Mike Riley ruled it out for offside! It seemed like a marginal decision by the official.

Once again, Camara produced his magic again when he flicked the ball over Pompey skipper Dejan Stefanovic and raced towards goal, but once again Kiely denied the striker, and ten minutes later, he raced onto another Thompson ball but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

In the 29th minute Benjani forced another corner which D'Allesandro took, and it was perfect for Gary O'Neil who diverted the ball towards the far post, but the Pompey fans behind the goal were left disappointed when it was headed off the line by Leighton Baines.

But three minutes later, Latics silenced the Portsmouth following when they took the lead. Jason Roberts pressurised Gary O'Neil into conceding the corner. David Thompson took it, but it was immediately headed away, but the ball landed to the former Blackburn midfielder again, and he planted the ball back into the box. Jason Roberts headed it straight at Dean Kiely, but he spilled to Henri CAMARA who side-footed home from close range.

It could have been even worse for Pompey when Camara missed what seemed like his seventh chance of the afternoon when he headed wide from Gary Teale's cross. But then right at the other end of pitch, Pompey went forward and Gary O'Neil's long range effort from twenty five yards saw the ball dip late and it clipped the top of the bar!

In the 41st minute David Thompson produced a deadly looking corner, and it was perfect for Matt Jackson who was unmarked in the penalty area, but the defender headed wide of the far post.

Half-Time: Latics 1 - 0 Portsmouth

Portsmouth had a glorious chance to level the scores just minutes after the restart when Benjani went past Jackson and put in a low cross towards the near post where Svetoslav Todorov was only a yard away, but he spooned it over the bar! Latics were given a big let off because it was most incredible miss seen in a long time at the JJB Stadium.

And Pompey had a chance almost as good just before the hour mark when Brian Priske's cross from the right flank found Gary O'Neil who was in plenty of space and fired a shot towards the target, but Pollitt made a vital save.

The south coast club gave themselves a vital lifeline in the 63rd minute Matt Taylor's half volley saw the ball bounce off the far post and it left Zimbabwean striker BENJANI the opportunity to head home right on the line.

Portsmouth were on fire, and they immediately set out to get themselves another goal. Andres D'Allesendro saw his corner only half cleared by the Latics defence, and the ball fell to Pedro Mendes, and the Portuguese midfielder saw his volley palmed away by Pollitt. And a minute later D'Allesandro sent a curling shot from the edge of the box just inched over Pollitt's far post.

Todorov crossed towards Benjani, whose header looked to be going in, but Gary Teale's handled the ball to divert it away from the goal! As a result, referee Milk Riley awarded the penalty and sent the Scottish winger off.

Matthew TAYLOR powered the ball from the penalty spot into the far corner past the reach of Pollitt. The Pompey fans went mad, and Teale's hand could help the Fratton Park club retain their top flight status.

And Pompey almost took another stride towards safety in the 74th minute when Gary O'Neil broke the offside trap and went forward towards Mike Pollitt, but the former Rotherham 'keeper made a brilliant block.

The south coast club had dominated most of the second half, and Benjani threatened when he used his strength to get past Stephane Henchoz, but when he did the former Auxerre man fired straight at Pollitt.

In stoppage time Portsmouth were just minutes away from completing their great escape, although O'Neil earned himself a yellow card for a cynical hack on Pascal Chimbonda. Pollitt humped the ball upfield from the free-kick but Pompey cleared and broke away to keep the lead.

With Birmingham only managing a goalless draw at St. Andrews against Newcastle, referee Mike Riley's final whistle meant that Latics will be playing Portsmouth twice more next season.

Full-Time: Latics 1 - 2 Portsmouth

Latics Starting Line-Up: Pollitt, Chimbonda, Baines, Henchoz, Jackson, Teale, Kavanagh (Johansson 84), Thompson (Scharner 72), McCulloch, Camara (Connolly 80), Roberts (c).

Portsmouth Starting Line-Up: Kiely, Priske, Taylor, Primus, Stefanovic (c), O'Neil, Mendes (Hughes 68), Davis (Pamarot 46), D'Allesandro, Todorov (Routledge 90), Mwaruwari.

Unused Substitutes: Ashdown, Karadas.
