Germany Calling For Chim
Chimbonda in surprise French World Cup call-up.

Latics right-back Pascal Chimbonda has received a shock call-up to the French World Cup squad, which was announced this morning (Sunday) by France coach Raymond Domenech.

It is the first time Chimbonda has received any kind of international call-up, as he has never represented his country at youth or Under 21 level.

The call up comes straight after he was voted by his fellow professionals into the PFA Premiership Team of the Year, as well as being voted Players' Player of The Season by his team-mates at Wigan.

It could be the latest twist in a developing transfer saga which has have already seen Latics reject two official bids of £2 million and £3 million from Tottenham for the right back, with Chairman Dave Whelan having put a price tag of £6 million on the Frenchman's head.



Chimbonda controversially handed in his transfer request in the dressing room at Highbury straight after the final game of the season but the club has said they would not stand in his way 'as long as the right offer comes along.'

Manager Paul Jewell said: "The call-up is a reflection of how well he's played for us throughout the season and is fully deserved in my mind, as well as being a great boost for the club and a reflection of how the coaching staff here at Wigan have believed in him all season and encouraged him to prove his potential on the Premiership stage.

"Ideally, of course, I would love to keep him here but if he does go, we will not be selling him for less than he's worth. A player who has not only made the PFA team of the year, but now also the French World Cup squad, is a prized asset for anyone and it was Wigan Athletic who took the gamble on him last summer."
