Rooney And Ronaldo Make Peace

Cristiano Ronaldo has denied claims he is at loggerheads with Wayne Rooney after Saturday's controversial World Cup clash.
England striker Rooney was dismissed for stamping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho, although he was visibly irate at his club-mate's role in the incident.

Ronaldo made apparent his outrage at Rooney's stamp to the match referee, but has now revealed that he and his team-mate exchanged text messages shortly after the match to clear the air.

In an exclusive interview with the website of GesitFute - his representative agency - Ronaldo said: "I would like to make it clear that there is no problem at all between me and Rooney. No problem at all.

"At the end of the game, we exchanged a series of text messages just as we had on the day before. This reinforces that I have a fine relationship with Rooney.

"I would like to make it clear that there is no problem at all between me and Rooney. Between the two of us, everything is clear."

"Between the two of us, everything is clear. In fact, he didn’t just send me congratulations for going forward in the World Cup, he also told me we have a great team, and if we carry on as we have, we will get a long way.

"He wasn’t angry with me, or about anything that happened. And moreover he told me to ignore the things written in the English press on this subject, they only want to stir things up. That’s how they are and we are used to it."

The 21-year-old star, whose side faces France in Wednesday's semi-final, also denied his influence in Rooney's dismissal.

He said: "How is it possible that I would get him sent off? I am not the referee with the power to send off anyone I want, nor do I have the ability to convince him to show cards.

"The referee produced the red card because he thought that he had to, and my participation in that was absolutely zero."

Rooney closes book on Ron row debate

Wayne Rooney has attempted to end any remaining doubt that he and Cristiano Ronaldo have had a falling out.

The 20-year-old Reds forward was sent off in England's quarter final defeat against Portugal for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.

Ronaldo protested to the referee after the incident had taken place, but the Portuguese winger is adamant he wasn't trying to get Rooney sent off.

In a statement, Rooney said he was "gobsmacked" to have been sent off, but bears no grudge against his United team-mate.

"I want to say absolutely categorically that I did not intentionally put my foot down on Carvalho," said Rooney. "I bear no ill feeling to Cristiano but am disappointed he chose to get involved."
Referee Horacio Elizondo said Ronaldo didn't influence his decision to show Rooney a red card.

"It was violent play and therefore he got a red card," he told The Times. "People can say what they want [about Ronaldo] but this had absolutely no influence. For me it was a clear red card."

Rooney admitted his disappointment at being sent off in a World Cup, but also feels his honest style of play has been called into question.

"When the referee produced the red card I was amazed - gobsmacked," he said. "Obviously I'm bitterly disappointed to have been sent off in a World Cup finals match for England.

"I am of the same opinion now as I was at the time that what happened didn't warrant a red card. If anything, I feel we should have had a free-kick for the fouls committed on me during the same incident.

"If you ask any player - and indeed almost any fan - they will tell you that I am straight and honest in the way I play. From what I've seen in the World Cup, most players would have gone to ground at the slightest contact but my only thought then was to keep possession for England."

He paid tribute to rest of his team-mates for holding out and taking the game to penalties.

"I thought the England lads were awesome after I went off and the effort they put in was amazing," he said. "Truly if there was any justice England would now be preparing for a World Cup semi-final. Sadly, however, that is not to be in 2006."
FA back Rooney over Fifa appeal

The Football Association have confirmed they will back Wayne Rooney in the striker's plea of innocence over the red card he received in England's World Cup quarter final defeat to Portugal.

The Manchester United striker was dismissed in the 62nd minute of Saturday's clash by referee Horacio Elizondo for an apparent stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.

The controversial involvement of Rooney's Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo in the incident has clouded the issue, however, and Fifa are yet to decide on the punishment they will mete out to Rooney, who was also seen to push Ronaldo.

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington has made it clear that England have exonerated Rooney of blame and have pleaded with Fifa's disciplinary commission to show lenience.

Rooney claimed on Monday that he was 'gobsmacked' by his dismissal but, despite The FA's public backing of the player, it is unlikely he will avoid being suspended for The Three Lions' opening Euro 2008 qualifier.

"I can confirm The FA will be submitting a response to Fifa within the next 36 hours with regard to Wayne Rooney's sending-off," said Bevington.

"Wayne has already made clear publicly he did not have any intention of kicking Carvalho.

"It is also worth noting that we believe there were one or two potential fouls against Wayne during the same move
."

Meanwhile, Bevington also confirmed that The FA are liaising with Fifa over the international suspension of Greece.

The Greeks were due to be the first opponents of new manager Steve McClaren's England tenure in a friendly match on August 16.

However, the Greek federation's suspension by Fifa for failing to adhere to international guidelines could mean England will turn to alternatives in their bid to warm up for a European Championship qualifying campaign.

"I can confirm we have spoken to Fifa and are awaiting further guidance from them as to the status of our fixture with Greece," said Bevington.
Real not ruling out Ronaldo

Real Madrid are refusing to rule out a move for Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal winger has been strongly linked with Real in the last few weeks with Real presidential candidate Juan Manuel Villar Mir claiming Ronaldo was keen on a move to El Santiago Bernabeu.

However, with Villar Mir losing out to Ramon Calderon for the Madrid presidency, it put a major question mark over Real's interest in Ronaldo.

But new Real director of sport Predrag Mijatovic insists any decision on a move for Ronaldo will rest with their top managerial target Fabio Capello.

"Right now, it's in Fabio Capello's hands,"Mijatovic told The Sun.

"The first thing I would say about Ronaldo is he backed another candidate to become Real president. That is unfortunate.

"The second is we have others who can play in his favoured position, like David Beckham.

"The decision will depend entirely on whether Capello wants Ronaldo
."

Mijatovic also revealed he is hopeful that Real can lure top targets in Arjen Robben, Cesc Fabregas and Kaka to the Spanish capital.

Calderon claimed prior to the elections that all three players were interested in a move to Real and Mijatovic admitted they plan to talk to the clubs about all three players.

"The players want to come, now we have to talk to the clubs," added Mijatovic.
