GOAL: 蘇斯克查 (40、48)

VENUE: 奧脫福球場
ATTENDENCE:

United 2 Newcastle 0

Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo and armed with two goals from Ole Gunner Solskjaer, the Reds returned to winning ways in the Premiership with a comfortable 2-0 victory over a Newcastle side that rarely threatened to deny United all three points.

After a draw with Reading and defeat to Arsenal, Sir Alex’s side had taken just one points from a possible six in the last two outings, beating Newcastle was imperative. The Reds achieved their goal with ease, returning to the top of the Premiership above Chelsea on goal difference.

Sir Alex made two changes from the starting line-up that snatched three points from Benfica on Tuesday; Darren Fletcher replacing John O’Shea in midfield and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming in for midweek match-winner Louis Saha up front.

Newcastle came with the intention of striking on the break. Glenn Roeder, his 4-5-1 formation spearheaded by Shola Ameobi as the lone striker, intended Damien Duff and James Milner support from the flanks. But, they rarely got the opportunity.

Nicky Butt, warmly welcomed by the home crowd, formed part of a tenacious trio alongside Emre and Scott Parker in midfield. He made his fifth appearance against United since leaving in summer 2004, but this was his first return to Old Trafford as an opponent. He played against the Reds twice in Birmingham’s colours and twice for Newcastle, all away from Manchester. But there would be no favours for old friends as the Reds sought to maintain a proud record against Newcastle under Sir Alex Ferguson, who has never lost to the Magpies at Old Trafford.

And, if the Norwegian’s goal just before the break was down to his intuitive striker’s instinct to be in the right place at the right time, his second, three minutes after the restart, bore the hallmarks of good fortune all poachers possess. Making a run into space, Ole got in the way of Vidic’s shot from the edge of the area and the ball deflected in off his heels.

United were rampant. Fletcher forced a save low to his right from Harper, Ronaldo followed up the rebound with a shot from close range that skimmed the crossbar. Unperturbed by his miss, the 21-year-old led the charge again, jinking his way into space before his shot through Stephen Carr’s legs hit the post.

It was merely a matter of how many United would score; Newcastle had succumbed to stemming the flow of wave after wave of attacks.

Newcastle introduced Obafemi Martins, but it made little impact as Ronaldo continued to run riot cutting inside from the left. After 65 minutes he went close again, lashing his shot just wide. Fletcher, hugely impressive on the right, had a strong penalty shout turned down five minutes later. Steven Taylor used his arm to stop the Scot’s shot from just inside the box, but the scores remained 2-0.

Scholes and Solskjaer went close late on, but with Newcastle out of ideas and, seemingly, the inclination to save the match, United sauntered to victory.
Solskjaer seizes the day

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attributes his two goals against Newcastle to his atttitude since returning from injury to "seize the moment".

Solskjaer, who claimed both goals in the 2-0 win, scored for the first time at Old Trafford in more than three years in the Premiership. The 32-year-old striker's last league goal in front of a home crowd came against Liverpool in a 4-0 win in May 2003.

"It's great to score again in the league," he said, having struck his fourth goal of the season. "But I don't think of it as three-and-a-half years, I just try to seize the moment.

"I was lucky enough to get a couple of scraps. The second one, I was just trying to get out of the way," he said, before explaining with typical striker's reluctance, "when they hit you like that you just have to take them!"

The Norwegian forward also completed his first full 90 minutes of the season. It is another hurdle cleared and Ole believes he is edging ever closer to consistent performances.

"In my first start this season, against Watford, that was probably my worst performance so far," he said. "I said to my friends it's like the roll of a dice, but hopefully it won't be one to six too many times.

"It's pleasing to get 90 minutes, it's good to get that out of the way so you don't have to answer questions about it! It's great being out there."

Solskjaer revealed that playing alongside Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo provided even greater impetus to return during his time on the sidelines.

"It really motivated me because I want to play with these lads," he said. "Even at my age, you're never too old to learn, and I learn from those two players.

"I spoke with Cristiano after the game," he added. "He went close a few times and didn't score, but that's the way it goes. Sometimes you play really well and create chances but don't score, and other times you get lucky and do. But he is playing fantastic football at the moment."

Heinze又傷-.-"

Duo are international doubts

Gabriel Heinze will miss Argentina's international friendly against Spain after suffering a hamstring injury during the 2-0 win over Newcastle.

The left-back was substituted in the first half at Old Trafford and is now unlikely to join up with the rest of his international team-mates as they prepare to take on the Spanish in Murcia.

Louis Saha is a major doubt for France as looks to recover from hamstring and groin strains. Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson included the striker on the bench against Newcastle, but chose not to use him.

"Louis is our main concern, that's why I didn't play him against Newcastle," said Sir Alex. "He has a groin injury and a tight hamstring.

"We'll report that to France and hope they understand and treat it with the right care. If he's fit, he can play. If not, then I don't think he should be on the list."
