IT'S not easy being a goalkeeper — just ask Scott Carson.
All your good work can be undone in an instant with one fatal error.
Carson found that out last week when his howler gifted Croatia their opening goal in the 3-2 victory which knocked England out of the race for Euro 2008.
But who else is in our hall of shame?
They're so bad that there's not even a single Scotsman among them.

Pedro Mendes’ hit-and-hoper from the halfway line offered little threat but Carroll fumbled the ball two feet into his goal before heaving it away. The horrible blunder would be higher up our list if it wasn't for the fact that neither ref Mark Clattenburg or his linesman managed to see anything.

Who is the only Irishman not to know where Dublin is? The answer is Shay Given. The Newcastle and Republic of Ireland stopper was the butt of jokes after he put the ball down to kick it out unaware that Dion Dublin was lurking behind him. The Coventry striker nipped around him to score – cue uncontrollable laughter.

As Paolo Di Canio advanced on the United goal with just Barthez to beat, the French keeper stood still with his arm raised to claim offside. Whether he genuinely thought the decision was going to go his way is unclear. But what was certain was Di Canio kept his head to hand West Ham an FA Cup shock.

This West Midlands derby was the first time the two sides had met in nine years. With Villa already trailing, Olof Mellberg aimed a throw-in to Enckelman with the keeper ready to pump the ball upfield. But the Finn failed to control the ball and watched in horror as it rolled into an open net.

Despite rediscovering fame for his scorpion kick, Higuita won’t want to remember his performance at Italia 90. Colombia were already a goal down against Cameroon with 10 minutes of extra-time left when the perm-haired keeper recklessly dithered with the ball 35 yards from goal. Veteran hitman Roger Milla nicked it off him to score – and leave Higuita’s reputation in tatters.

His nickname at Arsenal may have been Safe Hands - but that doesn't much help if you don’t even touch the ball. At 1-1, England were looking favourites for a place in the semi-finals against 10-man Brazil. But when Ronaldinho floated a harmless looking free-kick to the far post, Seaman got his feet in a tangle and the ball dropped in. Cue tears and an early flight home.

Croatia 2 England 0, October 2006
Yes, Gary Neville should have been too experienced to play a back-pass on target. And, yes, the ball took a horrendous bobble from a divot in the Zagreb pitch. But Robinson was under no pressure from the Croatia forwards and could easily have taken a touch before hoofing the ball clear. A nightmare to relive – and the Tottenham keeper has yet to fully recover.
