Spain striker Torres to stay at Atletico Madrid
MADRID, July 25 (Reuters) - Spain striker Fernando Torres has ruled out a move away from Atletico Madrid.


'I am here for the pre-season just like last year and have no intention to leave. I want to stay here,' Torres told a news conference on Tuesday.


The 22-year-old international, Atletico's top scorer in each of the last four seasons, had remained quiet over his future since returning from the World Cup finals.

Manchester United and Inter Milan were reported to have been interested in signing Torres but the striker said he was only focused on Atletico.

'We need to forget about last season's disappointments. We have a new coach (Javier Aguirre) in whom I have confidence and he does in me,' Torres added.

'We have signed some great new players and I am really looking forward to working with them next season.'

Torres, who has 34 caps with Spain, has a contract with Atletico until 2008. Atletico finished 10th in Primera Liga last season.



oh man...Torres is not joining Man U for at least this season....Ruud is leaving as well, Saha, Rooney, Simth, and Rossi.....cant convice me that Man U will get a good result....
Rossi really does have potential to be a good player.....but not now...
Maybe Sir Alex can think of Klose ...he's not a bad choice to substitute Ruud~~

Pique enjoying Spanish charge
Gerard Piqué is delighted to have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European U19 Championship with Spain.

The young United centre-back scored two powerful headers in his side's 4-0 win over Scotland on Thursday, and seven points from three games saw the Spanish advance to the last four as Group B winners.

The two-time champions notched 10 goals in their three group games, and Piqué admitted to the official UEFA website: "It’s certainly interesting, in the first match [a 5-3 win against Turkey] the team was a little nervous and it was our first game together since the end of May.

"But we started well and, although we were lacking a little sharpness and there are things we can improve, as we play more games we will get getter and better."

Piqué, who was rested for the incidental draw against Portugal on Sunday night, is thriving on the strain and prestige of playing for his country.

"I'm very proud," he said. "To represent Spain is a feeling you cannot explain. Every match you have to give everything and if you play well you can be proud of yourself. If you don’t play well, you have to do better next time because it’s important for you and important for your country.

"The most important thing is how to play under pressure. You are under pressure to win every match, to reach the semi-finals, to reach the final, to win the tournament.

"In top-level football, you have to learn how to cope with such pressure and to play for the result."

Spain will face Austria on Wednesday afternoon in Wronki, Poland, while the other semi-final pits Scotland against the Czech Republic.



Hooray!!scoring two goals...cant wait to see him playing at Man U and making a partnership with Rio~~

20M defintely is too much for Carrick....10-12M is acceptable....
maybe 14M + Silverstre is a good deal....i dont like Silverstre so much....he's like 28 or 29....it's time for him to seek some new challenges~~~

oh..originally, i thought you guys would have some good comments on Defoe as he's a pretty player to substutite Ruud...

Defoe + Rooney is a pretty promising English forward.....as Sir Alex is Defoe's admirer for a long time....
Maybe now he thinks Man U is underachieving....if he had thought of the reason why he wasn't on the last 23 player list  to Germany, he would defintiely love to join Man U with Carrick~~~~

it's not that expensive....it's up to 18.6M...if Carrick plays in a good form in this season, like scoring more than 10 goals for example, or playing 30+ matches for man U in the coming season, then Man U will have to pay more, but the max is 18.6M...like Rooney's case, Rooney's fee is up to 36-40M...

so till now, we still dont know how much did Man U pay for the initial transfer fees~

Tottenham have revealed that they could receive £18.6 million from Manchester United for Michael Carrick.

The midfielder is due to arrive in Manchester on Monday to undergo a medical and agree personal terms with The Red Devils.

A fee was agreed on Friday which allowed Carrick to head to Manchester and Spurs have now confirmed the size of the bid which persuaded them to give the green light to the transfer.

"Tottenham Hotspur plc announces that agreement has been reached for the transfer of the player registration of Michael Carrick, subject to the player agreeing personal terms and passing a medical, to Manchester United Football Club for a total consideration of up to £18.6 million," read a statement on Spurs' official website.

Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson has been targeting a holding midfielder ever since the departure of Roy Keane and he settled on Carrick despite being linked with a clutch of players including Patrick Vieira, Mahamadou Diarra and Marcos Senna.

Carrick could well be joined by more new faces in Manchester before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

"We have targeted several players but in my experience, these things take time," said Ferguson.

"Michael will have his medical on Monday and then, hopefully, we will be able to conclude that deal."
