Comment
The new Premier League season kicked off with a record for Chelsea as we made it 64 consecutive undefeated league games at the Bridge.
As always with a new campaign, there is renewed hope that it can be a special year, and José Mourinho's side have given every indication this could be the case.
Despite the narrow margin of victory, we were in control of the game for long spells, with forwards Pizarro and Kalou linking up as if they had been team mates for years rather than minutes.
The number of goalscoring opportunities we created will be encouraging for fans, after criticism in pre-season that we had not scored enough goals.
Our visitors created little, particularly in the second half, but will take heart at their battling performance.
Finally, it was pleasing to see Mikael Forssell on his return, and he gave home fans a scare after opening the scoring. We hope he can have an injury-free season and show the League what he can do.
Today though was all about Chelsea, a new record and Essien's winning strike was worthy of winning any game.
賽後摩連奴話
'The wingers produced incredible football, and the strikers played with great dynamic,' said the manager.
'I always thought we could score goals, not the kind of game where you feel it's difficult to create or score. We create and we score. Of course we concede two goals and I don't like to concede two goals, but that's part of the game and also the consequence of Birmingham because they played a really good game, but we have three points, the quality of our game and the quality of our goals.'
