Arsenal boss Arsenal Wenger today insisted the club “haven’t got a deal” with Southampton for teenage striker Theo Walcott.
It was claimed this morning that the 16-year-old was likely to join the Gunners worth up to £10m depending on appearances.
However Wenger told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I rate the player but we haven’t got a deal.”
Asked if he felt a fee of between £10m-£15m was high for such an inexperienced player, Wenger said: “It is not a lot – it is massive money even for a confirmed player and a little bit high.”
Saints also claimed no deal had been struck for the teenager who is reckoned to be a certain England international of the future.
Chairman Rupert Lowe and director of football Clive Woodward visited the Gunners’ training ground yesterday, but the Coca-Cola Championship club deny there was an ulterior motive behind the trip.
Lowe dismissed suggestions that the club were about to offload their prize asset.
“It is the first I have heard of it,” he said.
“We would have to have agreed a fee for him to do that – and we have not done so.
“Clive Woodward and I visited Arsenal’s training ground on Thursday just to look at their facilities which are magnificent.
“Maybe that has caused some crossed filter-032s? But we have not agreed to sell Theo, we want to keep him.” |
