Wayne can have 'lifetime contract'
Sir Alex Ferguson says the club are keen to open talks with Wayne Rooney about extending his contract, insisting he wants the United striker to remain at Old Trafford "for a lifetime."
Rooney himself had earlier stated his intention to sign an extension to his current deal which runs until 2010. And his manager is hoping the Reds can get something tied up in the coming months.
"It's something David [Gill] and I have already filter-004ed because we all want Wayne to stay here for a lifetime," revealed Sir Alex. "He's a fantastic footballer who has the energy, enthusiasm and desire to remain at the top.
"We have some other young players like that and what we've always tried to do is make sure that the contract situation is always on the positive side for us. We did it with Ronaldo last season and we did it with young Rossi in the summer when he signed a new contract.
"We'll continue to do that because we have a good young group of players that we want to keep together for a long time. Wayne is without question part of that," added the Reds' boss.
United's chief executive David Gill echoed Sir Alex's sentiments but refused to put a deadline on the talks.
"It's in our plans to speak to Wayne but we're not going to put a deadline on it," declared Gill. "At the moment we're concentrating on this transfer window and other matters.
"Nevertheless, the fact that Wayne has indicated he wants to extend his contract is very positive. I'm sure we'll sit down and sort something out; it's in our interests and his to do that." |
