Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson concedes he may keep Ben Foster at Old Trafford next season, if he fails to land Tomasz Kuszczak.
Ferguson has been trying to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Kuszczak all summer, as he seeks an understudy for Edwin van der Sar following Tim Howard's loan switch to Everton.
However, he has been rebuffed thus far with several bids turned down by Baggies chief Bryan Robson and now, it seems Foster - who was lined-up to move to Watford on-loan - could be asked to sit on United's bench next term.
The young custodian spent last term at Vicarage Road and showed plenty of promise in playing an instrumental in The Hornets' surprise promotion-winning campaign.
Ferguson had been eager for the player to return to the Hertfordshire outfit and win further playing time in the top flight, but this plan may be scuppered by West Brom's reluctance to sell.
''We have to think about keeping Ben because there has been no progress with Kuszczak,'' conceded Ferguson.
''West Brom have turned down our offer, so it has to be a consideration that Ben stays with us.''
Meanwhile, in a similar scenario, Ferguson is also undecided as to what approach to take with Giuseppe Rossi next season.
The diminutive striker had been earmarked for a loan departure, but the uncertainty surrounding Ruud van Nistelrooy means Ferguson may have to rethink his plans.
"If the situation changes in terms of forward players and Ruud does go, I will have to make a decision about Giuseppe and it may be that I keep him," said Ferguson.
"If I have to do that, I am keeping a player with a lot of talent.
"He is a natural goalscorer, has a good football brain and he will improve by playing in our team.
"But, if van Nistelrooy does stay, Giuseppe going out on loan for six months will be a great experience for him. I am sure he will come back a better and a more mature player." |
