Torres stays in Madrid

Fernando Torres has ended speculation linking him with a move to United by announcing that he will stay with Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish striker, who had been strongly tipped to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford, held a press conference in Madrid on Tuesday morning.

There the 22-year-old said: "I want to stay. A lot has been said during my holidays about my possible exit, but the reality is that I am here for one more year.

"I feel fine here. If I had wanted to leave Atletico Madrid I would have done it years ago."

Despite the fevered speculation linking Torres with Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson has stressed that his main priority is to strengthen United's midfield department.

Defoe wants Carrick stay

JERMAIN DEFOE believes that Michael Carrck does not need to leave Tottenham Hotspur in order to find success.

Defoe has been linked with moves to numerous clubs over the past few months is committed to the Spurs cause and hopes that his England international team-mate will remain at White Hart Lane.

Manchester United have already had one bid rejected for Carrick and Defoe joked that he is trying to injure the midfielder so he can stay at the club.

Defoe said: "Michael is one of our best players and is someone we don't want to lose. Last season Michael was unbelievable, he's a great player and was one of the best around.

"Obviously we want to keep players like that. I'm trying to injure him in training so he can't go anywhere!

"Michael is happy at Tottenham, we know that, and I hope he stays. Tottenham is a club going places and he can get the kind of success he wants here.

"I was interested to see on television the other day that Steven Gerrard was mentioning who he thinks will do well this season and he said Tottenham."

oh..originally, i thought you guys would have some good comments on Defoe as he's a pretty player to substutite Ruud...

Defoe + Rooney is a pretty promising English forward.....as Sir Alex is Defoe's admirer for a long time....
Maybe now he thinks Man U is underachieving....if he had thought of the reason why he wasn't on the last 23 player list  to Germany, he would defintiely love to join Man U with Carrick~~~~

Real Madrid have refused to confirm reports that they have made a new bid for United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

A report earlier on Wednesday suggested that the La Liga giants had tabled an offer in the region of €15million (£10.3million) for the Dutchman.

However, a Madrid spokeswoman said: "I don't know anything about it."

Real and Bayern Munich have already had one bid each rejected for the striker, who has been at United since 2001.

Despite speculation over van Nistelrooy's future, he is still in training with the rest of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad, and attracted praise by Sir Alex for his application in such difficulyt circumstances.

When asked if there had been any change in van Nistelrooy's situation, the Gaffer replied: "None at all. At this moment in time, without question [he's still a United player].

"He trained well yesterday. He had a good attitude to his training, which is good, therefore he's a United player."
