Match

Damien Francis' goal extends Wigan's unbeaten run to four matches to keep the club in the top half of the Premiership.

Paul Jewell had surprisingly dropped Mike Pollitt in favour for John Filan, who made his 50th top flight appearance this afternoon at GoodisonPark. Another landmark was captain Arjan De Zeeuw who made a century of Premiership appearances. The only other change was that David Connolly was dropped to the substitutes bench for Henri Camara.

The home side expectedly put on some early pressure, but Latics went on a swift counter attack after seven minutes. Kavanagh laid the ball off to Bullard whose twenty yard shot whistled over the bar.

Former Spurs midfielder Simon Davies was getting some unwanted attention from referee Rob Styles for mistimed challenges on Jason Roberts and Leighton Baines, but the Hampshire referee only gave a warning on both occasions.

Lee McCulloch's snap shot from the edge of the penalty area forced a corner on thirteen minutes, but Arteta easily cleared Jimmy Bullard's set piece. Two minutes later, Everton came within inches of taking a lead when Kevin Kilbane's header clipped the bar from an Arteta corner.

In the 17th minute, Latics could have also scored from a corner. Jimmy Bullard took it again, and flighted the ball superbly for Chimbonda to direct the ball towards goal with his head, but it was cleared off the line by former Porto defender Nuno Valente.

At the half way point of the first half, Leon Osman almost got a clear sight on goal after a Simon Davies throughball, but Pascal Chimbonda challenged well and stopped him in his tracks. The Goodison crowd roared for a penalty, but referee Styles was not interested.

Everton threatened again three minutes later when Phil Neville passed to Davies, who tried his luck from thirty yards with a dipping shot, but thankfully it went over Filan's crossbar.

Latics were riding their luck a little bit in the first half as they were soaking up all the pressure Everton applied onto them. De Zeeuw clashed with Osman a yard outside the penalty area just after the half hour mark. Arteta took the free kick, but the Spaniard curled the ball over the bar.

Latics almost grabbed a goal out of nothing five minutes before the break. Damien Francis fed the ball to Camara, who produced a delicate lob after seeing Nigel Martyn off his line, but the ball landed on the roof of net just beyond the far post. It was a very good effort by the Senegalese international.

But Everton squandered chances shortly after. Arteta played a short corner to Phil Neville, whose deep cross found the head of Tim Cahill, whose downward header from six yards was easily caught by Filan. In stoppage time, James McFadden laid the ball to Simon Davies, but the Welsh midfielder will be disappointed he did not test Filan from twenty-five yards as the ball flew past the near post.

Half-Time: Everton 0 - 0 Latics

Whatever Paul Jewell said at half-time certainly did the trick. Latics came out guns blazing as soon as the whistle was blown and it wasn't long before Latics silenced the Goodison crowd with a goal. After picking up the ball from Chimbonda's cross, Jason Roberts pulled the ball back to Camara who was just six yards from goal. The former Wolves striker fired at Martyn who couldn't hold onto the ball and Damien Francis followed up with the tap-in.

But it appeared Latics were not happy with a one goal lead and immediately went looking for more. Leighton Baines, playing against the club who released him as a teenager, drilled the ball over the near post from the edge of the penalty area.

Minutes later, Graham Kavanagh's free kick, was headed over the bar by Lee McCulloch. It was a complete turnaround compared to the first half, but how long would it be before the home side began to fight back for an equaliser?

Everton boss David Moyes must have been concerned. He withdrew Kevin Kilbane and replaced him with Marcus Bent, who had scored Everton's only Premiership goal so far this term.

De Zeeuw earned himself a yellow card after hacking down Marcus Bent, conceding a free kick. McFadden took it but the ball rebounded off Wigan's defensive wall.

In the 72nd minute Simon Davies gave the ball to Tim Cahill, and the Australian drove it low past De Zeeuw, but it was straight at John Filan.

Everton were piling the pressure on again, and Latics had a lot of work to do to keep their lead intact. But when the Toffeemen did get a shot their finishing was woeful. With twenty minutes to go, Simon Davies was taken off for supersub Duncan Ferguson.

Soon after the Scot's introduction, Everton came on the attack again. James McFadden drove the ball across the face of goal, but Marcus Bent could not connect with the ball.

In the 78th minute Everton had a goal ruled out for offside. Tim Cahill headed down a cross from Mikel Arteta to Marcus Bent to tap in, but the striker was flagged by the linesman.

Filan had to work hard to keep Latics in the lead with seven minutes to go when he had to palm away Bent's shot. The Australian 'keeper had to stretch all the way to ensure the ball did not sneak inside the post.

The Australian had to stay alert just three minutes later as he had to tip over McFadden's deep cross which looked like it was going to creep in at the far post. But it was enough to help Latics record another memorable win in Merseyside.

Match

Two second half goals from Camara and McCulloch gave Latics their first win over the Trotters for fifteen years.

Paul Jewell had decided to keep the same starting line up after last weekend's excellent result at Goodison Park. Damien Francis started to make his 50th appearance in top flight football.

It was a cracking atmosphere which was helped by the five thousand travelling Wanderers fans who had been as eager as the home fans to witness the first derby match between the two sides for twelve years.

Latics immediately went out looking for an early goal in the first minute. Jimmy Bullard's corner found McCulloch who shot from the edge of the penalty area, but the Scotsman hit the ball tamely and it was easy for Jasskelainen to collect.

Kevin Davies received a warning from the referee after a quarter of an hour after a poor challenge on Chimbonda. The Bolton striker lunged into the Frenchman's calf.

Three minutes later, Chimbonda fouled Gardner and conceded the free kick twenty yards from the goal. Japanese international midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata curled the ball over the Latics defensive wall, and over the bar as well.

Leighton Baines fed the ball to Camara, who had his back towards the goal just outside the penalty area. The Senegalese striker knocked the ball back to Roberts whose first time shot went just wide of the near post.

Half way through the second half, the influential Chimbonda was forced to come off due to his earlier injury and was replaced by Ryan Taylor. This meant the former Tranmere player was now making his 100th league appearance of his career.

The game became predictably scrappy between two organised sides, and the visitors were using their physical strength well, particularly from set pieces, but neither side were able to produce any clear cut chances.

Nakata's long pass found Kevin Nolan at the edge of the area, but the Bolton midfielder's poor attempt at lobbing the oncoming John Filan saw the ball float harmlessly past the post for a goal kick.

Latics produced the best chance of the game just two minutes before the break. Henri Camara received the ball on the counter attack from Jason Roberts' long pass, before racing down the by-line and putting in a cross from the left flank towards the far post. Jimmy Bullard was there to direct the ball with his head towards the target, but it was straight at Jasskelainen.

Half-Time: Latics 0 - 0 Bolton Wanderers

Latics started the second half just as they did in the first, with a swift attacking move. Ryan Taylor nut-megged his marker to feed the ball to Jimmy Bullard. His cross was blocked by Radhi Jaidi but the ball fell to Damien Francis who hit first time, but it was a weak effort and it was straight at Jaaskelainen

But Latics prevailed just two minutes later with a swift counter attack. Jimmy Bullard's cross from the right flank was poorly headed away by N'Gotty, and the ball landed at the feet of Camara. Jaaskelainen ran from his line into no mans land, and the former Wolves striker who easily fired the into the empty net via the crossbar from twelve yards.

Latics skipper Arjan De Zeeuw came to the rescue on the hour to maintain the lead. Nakata's free kick was headed across the area by Jaidi. Kevin Nolan crossed the ball back towards the six yard line for Davies to head, but the Dutch giant was there to make the clearance.

But then just minutes later, Jewell's men had doubled their lead thanks to a superb strike by Lee McCulloch. Once again, Latics hit Wanderers on the counter attack, and Camara crossed the ball to Jimmy Bullard, but the midfielder lost his balance and the ball rebounded to the Senegalese striker again, This time Camara pulled the ball back to McCulloch, who drilled ball into far post from edge of area, giving Jaaskelainen no chance!

Wanderers got a goal back in the 68th minute to put the game back in balance. Substitute Stelios's cross from the right wing found defender Rahdi Jaidi who easily headed past John Filan at the near post.

Latics had a golden opportunity to wrap up the victory in the 73rd minute. Jaaskelainen strayed off his line and Camara's cross was perfect for Jason Roberts, but the Grenedan headed wide of the near post.

The visitors from nine miles down the road also had the habit of squandering their chances too. Bruno N'Gotty's free kick was headed down by Davies in a packed penalty area, and Stelios's first time shot went into the side netting at the near post.

Henri Camara came close to his second goal of the game when he drilled ball wide on 76 minutes from twenty five yards.

Damien Francis almost scored a sensational goal when Jimmy Bullard's corner was only half cleared by the Bolton defence. The former Norwich midfielder fired a brilliant first time volley, which must have stung the fingers of Jussi Jaaskelainen as the Finnish goalkeeper tipped the ball over the bar.

Latics kept surging forward for more, and they had a goal chalked off in the 83rd minute. Jimmy Bullard's throughball released Jason Roberts who ran into Bolton's area. His shot was parried first time by Jaaskelainen, but Camara tapped the ball in from close range, only to find the linesman had flagged him as offside.

But Wanderer's could not find a way through, and Paul Jewell's men clung onto their lead to claim their first win over local rivals Bolton for the first time in fifteen years. Once again Latics competed and matched their rivals all the way and have stretched their unbeaten run to five matches.

Full-Time: Latics 2 - 1 Bolton Wanderers

Latics Starting Line-Up: Filan, Chimbonda (Taylor 23), Henchoz, Camara (Connolly 90), McCulloch, Kavanagh, De Zeeuw (c), Francis, Bullard, Baines, Roberts.
